Kanjigram

Terms of Service

Last updated: August 30, 2026

This is a plain-language summary, not a substitute for reading the sections below. The short version: Kanjigram is a free tool that suggests a kanji spelling for your name based on public dictionary data. It's a starting point for exploring your name in Japanese, not an official translation, and not advice for anything permanent (tattoos included) without independently checking with a native speaker first.

1. What Kanjigram is

Kanjigram ("we," "us," the "Service") is a free web tool, built by an independent developer under the coconut.works brand, that suggests kanji (Japanese characters) matching both the sound and a meaning of a name you enter. Results are generated algorithmically from public reference data (KANJIDIC2 and the official Jōyō/Jinmeiyō kanji lists) and real-name pronunciation data — not by a human translator, and not reviewed case-by-case before being shown to you.

2. Not an official or certified translation

Kanjigram's output is one interpretation among many possible ones. Kanji assignment for a foreign name is inherently a creative choice, not a fixed fact — a native speaker, calligrapher, or naming professional could reasonably choose differently. Do not treat a result as:

For anything permanent or public-facing, we recommend confirming the result with a native Japanese speaker first.

3. Free to use, for now

Kanjigram is currently free, with no account required. We may introduce optional paid features in the future (for example, additional fonts or card styles). If we do, that will be clearly disclosed at the time, with its own pricing terms — it will not change the terms for anything you've already used for free.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

We may suspend or block access for anyone who violates these terms.

5. Intellectual property

The Kanjigram name, the coconut.works brand, the site's design, and the share-card artwork are owned by the operator. The underlying dictionary data is drawn from KANJIDIC2, made available by the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group under its own license, used here for the data lookups that power the tool.

Whatever kanji combination the tool suggests for your own name is yours to use personally — print it, share it, put it on a card. We just ask that you don't present Kanjigram's output as an official service or resell bulk-generated results as your own translation product.

6. No warranty, limitation of liability

Kanjigram is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, or uninterrupted availability. This is an independently built, small-scale tool — to the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any damages arising from your use of the Service, including decisions made based on its output.

7. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time; the "Last updated" date above will change when we do. Continuing to use the Service after an update means you accept the revised terms.

8. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Japan. Any dispute arising from these terms or the Service will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Japan.
